#4447, Music For Rivers, Part 1

From the Niger River in Mali in music by Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba to the Magdalena River in Colombia in music by Monte, hear music about rivers - specific rivers and rivers in general, as part of a two show mini-series.

Listen to new music by Turkish-German/Swiss duo Grandbrothers, and their work with a rolling flow to it, “Four Rivers.” Also, there’s music by Malian ngoni master Bassekou Kouyate and N’Goni Ba, who take us to a small village, Garana, at the banks of the Niger river in Mali, from the record, Miri.

Then, hear Anglo-German composer Claudia Molitor and a portion of her audio work, “Sonograma: Thames Suite,” a sonic accompaniment to a train journey. There’s also music by Simón Mejía of Colombian dance band Bomba Estéreo, working as Monte. His piece, “Habitat Sur” combines field recordings collected from the environment along the Magdalena River with guitar and electronics.

Also, hear music from Native American flutist Robert Mirabal and the electric string quartet, ETHEL from their collaborative record, The River. There’s also work by Norwegian pianist Ketil Bjørnstad and the late American cellist David Darling from their ECM record, The RiverPlus, from composer Sarah Kirkland Snider, hear “The River,” a piece from her song-cycle “Unremembered,” about a river in rural Massachusetts featuring vocals by Shara Nova. Then, sample music from a nine-part suite composed as a tribute to the various rivers of Brazil - Aguas da Amazonia by Philip Glass, written for the group Uakti, who play instruments that they designed and built themselves. That, and more.
